Renesas Launches Flagship MCUs RX74M and RX74N: First RX-Family Parts on 22nm with MRAM, Integrating EtherCAT, TSN and Post-Quantum Security at 600MHz

2026-10-29 Industry Insights

On October 22, Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723) announced its new flagship 32-bit microcontrollers, the RX74M and RX74N, in Beijing. Both parts run at up to 600MHz and are the first RX-family devices built on a 22nm process with embedded MRAM — more than doubling the performance of the 240MHz previous-generation RX72M/RX72N. The RX74M targets industrial and factory automation equipment such as AC drives, industrial robots and PLCs, while the RX74N addresses a broad range of industrial equipment including smart meters, power conditioners and HVAC systems. Both devices are available now.

On specifications, the new MCUs integrate a 600MHz RXv3e core with 1MB of MRAM (magnetoresistive RAM), 256KB of zero-wait-state TCM and 1.5MB of SRAM — MRAM requires no erase cycle before writing, which accelerates code and data updates, shortens programming time and reduces system downtime. Connectivity is the biggest highlight of this generation: the RX74M integrates an EtherCAT slave controller, a TSN-capable gigabit Ethernet switch and CAN FD on a single chip, directly supporting mainstream industrial networks including EtherCAT, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP, deterministic communication via TSN, and EtherNet/IP DLR device-level ring redundancy that previous generations could not implement. On the security side, the chips integrate ProtectZone isolation regions within the RX CPU, and the new-generation RSIP security IP extends public-key cryptography and authenticated encryption — supporting post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and meeting the full lifecycle security requirements of the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). A 300MHz variant with more than 20% lower power consumption is also offered, with packages spanning 100 to 320 pins and an operating temperature range of -40℃ to +125℃.

From the perspective of industry dynamics, industrial MCUs are simultaneously competing on three fronts: compute — the doubled clock frequency lets a single chip shoulder more complex real-time control; connectivity — the arrival of EtherCAT and TSN in high-performance MCUs means complex industrial nodes that previously required discrete “MCU + FPGA + external PHY” solutions are being consolidated onto a single chip; and security — the EU CRA turns cybersecurity from a bonus into a market-access requirement, and post-quant cryptography entering industrial controllers today prepares devices for compliance life cycles extending well past 2030. As deterministic industrial networking and hardware-level security become the default foundation of next-generation factories, MCU platform transitions will directly drive the industrial equipment refresh cycle.

For Junyi Microelectronics, this evolution maps directly onto our product roadmap. Junyi’s K-series edge AI motherboards and the compact industrial PC IPC-i5-1235U serve industrial control fields with clear requirements for time-sensitive industrial buses such as EtherCAT and TSN; our core boards J-3568/J-3576/J-3588 frequently pair with real-time controllers in a layered “application processor + real-time control” architecture within customer equipment. As upstream MCUs absorb more real-time control and security capability into a single chip, deployments of Junyi’s edge computing hosts 5G-EDGE-3399Pro/AI-BOX-3588 and touch-panel all-in-one machines on factory floors will benefit from simplified BOMs and improved reliability — while paving the way for customers’ CRA-compliant exports.
