On November 4, SpaceX announced a multi-year agreement with Qualcomm for Qualcomm to supply key ground-network technology for Starlink Mobile, the satellite-direct service for regular phones, building terrestrial infrastructure that complements satellite coverage and targeting a rollout next year.
Technology / Product Details
Starlink Mobile is SpaceX’s satellite-direct service for ordinary phones and is positioned as a challenger to terrestrial operators Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Qualcomm’s role is to provide the communication chips and network-equipment solutions needed for the ground network, with ground stations working together with satellites to cover connectivity for ordinary phones in remote, ocean, and post-disaster areas without terrestrial signal. Qualcomm EVP Durga Malladi said the two are building a “world-leading integrated satellite-terrestrial network.”
From the Industry Landscape…
Satellite-direct connectivity is extending the “Internet of Everything” from land to all domains. Qualcomm’s entry signals that terrestrial chip giants are now betting on integrated air-space-ground networks, turning phone-to-satellite from an “emergency capability” into an “everyday service.” For IoT and industrial edge, coverage defines the boundary of data collection and backhaul, and mature satellite communication will unlock compute and connectivity demand across energy, mining, maritime, and emergency wide-area applications.
Junyi Business Link
The combination of wide-area connectivity and edge compute needs reliable embedded terminals and gateways. Junyi Microelectronics’ core boards J-3568 / J-3576 / J-3588 and edge motherboards in the K series can serve as the data-processing base for satellite-direct terminals, edge computing hosts 5G-EDGE-3399Pro / AI-BOX-3588 handle local inference and protocol adaptation at edge nodes, and the industrial mini PC IPC-i5-1235U and the touch all-in-one provide display and control terminals for unattended sites.
