On November 2, at the 2026 Integrated Circuit Industry Promotion Summit and the 21st “China Chip” award ceremony held in Zhuhai, the on-device large-model chip maker METIC (Shenzhen METIC Technology Co., Ltd.) won the “China Chip · Rising Star” new-product award for its MEGA380 chip, built on an industry-first 3D distributed TPU architecture.

MEGA380 is an AI compute chip designed for on-device large-model scenarios, with the core innovation of the industry’s first 3D distributed TPU architecture. METIC was incubated by a “Peacock” team led by Professor Yu Hao of the Southern University of Science and Technology and founded in Shenzhen in 2023, focusing on embodied intelligence and on-device AI. Built on the LPU low-power inference unit that combines a systolic-pulse architecture with 3D-DRAM hybrid bonding (3D-PIM), MEGA380 achieves higher memory bandwidth on a very small die at lower power, supports on-device large-model inference from 1B to 32B parameters, keeps typical inference power within a few watts, and significantly improves token throughput.

On-device AI is shifting from a “parameter race” to “real-world deployment.” Running large models directly on phones, wearables and robots tests not just nominal TOPS, but the actual token throughput, bandwidth and latency achieved per watt. Architecture innovation such as 3D stacking and compute-in-memory is becoming the new route to narrow the “memory wall,” and edge compute competition is moving from “stacking TOPS” toward “engineering efficiency.”
